2027 Aquinas Conference: Augustine in the Theology of Aquinas

Now Accepting Proposals for the 2027 Aquinas Conference: Augustine in the Theology of Aquinas

We would like to invite you to submit an abstract for our 2027 Aquinas Conference.

The Aquinas Center for Theological Renewal at Ave Maria University presents a conference on “Augustine in the Theology of Aquinas” to be held January 28th – 30th, 2027 at Ave Maria University.

The influence of St. Augustine on the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas is well known. So too are the broad divergences in their stylistic, philosophical, and theological methods. Generalizations about the relation between the two greatest Catholic theologians are commonplace. Often the commonalities of their thought (a shared “theology of grace”) or their structural contrasts (“Platonic” and “Aristotelian”) are assumed. This conference has two aims: First, we seek to highlight aspects Aquinas's theology, philosophy, and biblical exegesis where the influence of Augustine’s thought has not been sufficiently appreciated. Second, we seek to identify features of Augustine’s theology that are engaged, developed and debated in Aquinas and his disciples. The result of the conference will be a deeper appreciation of the Augustinian-Thomistic synthesis.

Call for Papers: Brief proposals should be submitted to aquinascenter@avemaria.edu by September 1, 2026. Proposals should include a presentation title, 150- to 300- word abstract, and a current CV.

For more information about the conference, please keep an eye on our website, or email aquinascenter@avemaria.edu.
